Such a beloved musical and the man who created it deserves an updated film that speaks to a generation today who could relate to such a timeless production. And there are echoes of that concept that are sprinkled throughout that any musical theatre fan will appreciate.īut what’s amazing about tick, tick… BOOM! that brings together musical theatre geekery and our anger with the world today is how it embodies the musical that would make Larson famous: RENT. I won’t spoil the surprise but let’s just say there were more than a handful of audible gasps that were elicited from my mouth that really helped push this musical over the top for me. My personal favorite part that will warm any musical theatre nerd’s heart happens during “Sunday”. We’re all facing uncertainty and feeling like failures. tick, tick… BOOM! crafts these themes together with comedy and pathos, making it nearly impossible to not enjoy what Miranda created in his film directorial debut. At this time we’re all underdogs wishing we could do more to make a positive difference in the world. What also helps draw us in are the themes that help sell that intimacy. How can we care about playful movie musicals with everything going on? But by drawing the audience in this way, we naturally care for these characters. Intimacy is necessary in these cynical and jaded times. This is best on display on their duet number, “No More”. De Jesús’ natural charisma and ease balance Garfield’s mania out in a way that elicits a soft smile. His lovingness extends beyond the audience…or more so back to his main players, including the comical and supportive Michael (Robin de Jesús). Garfield is a master at drawing one in and he does so in a winsome way that is charming and loving at times. Breaking the fourth wall, I realized what was missing from the movie musical: Intimacy. Garfield, manic energy eliciting sympathy for days, is able to brilliantly captivate the viewer. His stage musical was the inspiration behind the movie musical sensation In The Heights and he’s accomplished, with his directorial debut, the helming of an earnest movie musical that has restored my faith in the genre with the Andrew Garfield-fronted tick, tick… BOOM!.įrom the rousing first number “30/90”, tick, tick… BOOM! invites the audience in an intimate way as a part of Jonathan Larson’s life back in 1990. And Lin-Manuel Miranda’s efforts have largely been successful. The movie musical has been in decline over the past decade, so I was happily surprised to see the genre making a comeback in the 2020s. ![]()
